Signs of Heart Disease

The saying goes, “God saves Man, and Man saves heart”. Heart is the seat of life. We live till our heart beats. Anatomically heart is the cause of blood circulation in the body. It is blood that takes food to each and every cell in your body, and that obviously is one of the most crucial of the bodily functions. It’s but natural that heart needs extra care to function properly. Since it is a sensitive structure of muscles, it is susceptible to a host of diseases and disorders which, however can be averted if you pay proper attention. Remember, your body needs you too! In the daily fast paced life you are often made to forget about the internal systems of your body that go on relentlessly to make you stand on your feet. And in those, your heart leads from the front. If you feel that there are signs of heart disease that you are encountering, don’t ignore them. Consult your cardiologist without delay!

Signs of heart disease differ from one person to another based on the condition of the heart. This is to say that there are no general universal symptoms. It is up to you to identify any of these signs if you are facing any. It is important to be aware of the probable manifestations of a heart disease so that you can take preventive measures before it’s too late. The following list will help you gain some information of the most frequent signs of heart disease:

  • Shortness of breath: How often have you found yourself panting? Have you waked up suddenly at night and gone through a phase of fast breathing? Beware! This may be the first sign of a cardiac disorder. Failure of heart functions may often lead to shortness of breath. People with a weakening heart can experience this after hard work or while lying flat. This may also occur in case of lung disorders like asthma, bronchitis etc. but even then it will have a direct impact on the heart functions.
  • Palpitations: this is perhaps the commonest of the signs of heart disease. You may experience a sudden ‘skip’ of heart beat or periods of irregular beats. This is the warning bell for a number of cardiac problems like premature atrial complexes (PACs), premature ventricular complexes (PVCs), super ventricular tachycardia etc.
  • Lethargy, Fatigue or Somnolence: This is nothing but a feeling of tiredness, lack of energy and wanting to sleep even during the day. It may quite pass off as the result of overwork, or too much stress. But hang on! The problem might be deeper than that. These can be symptoms of heart disorders and can also herald other system malfunctions.
  • Dizziness: A common expression of numerous internal problems like anemia, thyroid, diabetes etc. Most often this is also one of the earlier signs of heart disease.

Other than these general signs there are other symptomatic signs which vary from one person to another. Some of these are:

  • Feeling of Nausea
  • Increased rate of heart beat
  • Excessive sweating
  • Breathing problems

If you’re experiencing any of these go to your doctor immediately. Prevention is always better than cure!
