High Cholesterol Causes
There are several high cholesterol causes that can bring about a problem with your cholesterol levels. A few of these are not something you can control but others are things that you can certainly dig your heels in and do everything possible to control. It is just a matter of deciding that you want to be healthy.
If you have parents, grandparents, or siblings who have high cholesterol, it is most likely that you are genetically prone to it and will develop it at some point in your life. When your genetics give you high cholesterol, you can develop it as young as in your 20’s. You will have to work especially hard to keep it at a healthy level.
Other high cholesterol causes that you cannot control include diabetes and menopause. Obviously, women are going to get older and are going to go through menopause. So that is not something that you can really change. Diabetes may or may not be controllable, depending on what kind you have. Either way, you will need to be eating the right sort of diet and controlling your weight.
Controllable causes for high cholesterol are smoking, drinking to excess, obesity, and the food you eat. Smoking has long been the cause of many health issues so it’s not too surprising to see it among the high cholesterol causes. It is, however, one of the causes you can control. Simply stop smoking and in five years you will be at no greater risk than non-smokers for heart disease. Lose the weight you need to lose, and start eating a healthier diet. These are all things you CAN do.
Drinking too much alcohol is just as bad as smoking when it comes to the build up of too much bad cholesterol. While it may be fine, and even good for you, in very small amounts, too much is going to contribute to an unhealthy heart. If you have a drinking problem, you should become committed to getting some help for that. Alcoholism is one of the biggest high cholesterol causes there is. It not only contributes to bad mental health, but bad physical health as well, especially when it involves your heart.
The best way to keep your heart healthy is to follow a lifestyle that includes eating right, getting enough exercise, and staying away from unhealthy habits such as smoking and too much drinking. These things in combination with regular physical check ups with your doctor should keep you around for a very long time.
