Cholesterol Heart Disease

Cholesterol heart disease is really just another way of saying coronary heart disease, or that the disease was brought about by too much bad cholesterol in the body. It is necessary to have SOME cholesterol in the body but when you over do it and the number is too high, that is when you develop heart related problems due to having too much cholesterol. You may also have “bad” cholesterol that is just building up around the heart’s arteries.

The arteries are what carry the needed oxygenated blood and other nutrients to the heart. Cholesterol heart disease occurs when excess fatty deposits called plaque build up on the inner walls of the arteries, making them too narrow to carry the blood and nutrients to the heart properly. The name for this condition is atherosclerosis and it is the most common cause of heart disease.

People who have atherosclerosis need to do everything they can in order to keep down the amount of bad cholesterol in their bodies. Unless you have a genetic or inherited tendency for it, there are many things you can do to control it.  Some people are very stubborn and refuse to take good care of themselves, yet are very surprised when they contract cholesterol heart disease.

Some major contributing factors to the high cholesterol are obesity, smoking, poor diet, drinking to excess, diabetes, genetics, and menopause. As you can see from the list, some of these are controllable while others are not. If you are genetically predisposed to having high cholesterol, you will most likely need to be on medication as well as living a healthy lifestyle. Those things combined will give you a fighting chance.

As for smoking, drinking, and being extremely overweight, those are things you can definitely work on. Smoking causes a host of health issues but cholesterol heart disease is one of the worst. If you are a smoker and quit, within five years you will not be at any higher risk for heart disease than a non-smoker. That is something worth thinking about. Losing weight and being at a healthy weight will take stress off of your heart as well as possibly curing diabetes and bringing down your cholesterol.

There are many things that you can do on your own to stay healthy and keep your heart beating. Regular check ups added to a healthier lifestyle will do wonders to protect you from heart disease.
